Initial Consultation – Bariatric Surgeon #1

Initial Consultation – Bariatric Surgeon #1

Today I had my initial consultation with a Bariatric Surgeon (referred by my GP) at a local Private Hospital.

I’d done my research and had some idea of the different types of Bariatic Procedures, but didn’t really know much about the process, risks or timescales.

The surgeon was VERY blunt about my medical condition, and spoke a LOT about the risks, which I think is a good thing,

He very quickly ruled out Gastric Bypass as an option but didn’t really explain why (I got the impression that the “risks” were too great).

Overall I found the session informative, and left with a much better idea about some of the risks of bariatric surgery… but this surgeon focused so much on the risks, I got the impression that he didn’t want to proceed with surgery… so was very surprised when he gave me a list of tests to get, and suggested I book a follow up appointment in a month or so once all the tests were complete.

Here are the tests he asked me to get :

  • CT Scan
  • Chest Xray
  • Abdominal Ultrasound
  • Endoscopy
  • ECG
  • Dobutamine Stress Echo
  • and also consultations with a Dietician and Psychologist

This consultation cost $250.

I had some luck on the Lotto earlier this year and booked a couple of penthouses for a couple of weeks with friends on the 41st floor of Q1 on the Gold Coast 🙂

I didn’t know at the time, but I was soon to be diagnosed with Type II Diabetes.

50th Birthday… what a Milestone…  but how did that come up so fast ??

I was pretty Happy with my Life (although realised by now that I was significantly overweight).. also started to notice that my body wasn’t quite as good at doing some of the things that I used to take for granted.

Treated myself to two weeks Photo Tour of Cambodia – LOVED it.

Hmm… just reliased that all my birthday posts seem to feature Birthday Cakes… I dont really LIKE cake that much .. but perhaps this is symptomatic of my like of sweet carbs…

A little before my 49th birthday, someone I had considered a “close friend” who I had spent a lot of time with over the previous 12 months or so, decided – seemingly out of the blue – that we should no longer keep in touch..

She had a whole lot of emotional issues going on at the time, with a messy marriage.. and financial concerns… so I don’t blame her, she had to get herself sorted out… However I was more emotionally attached than I had realised and it hit me hard….

I put on close to 20 kilos over the next 12 months or so,  which was the most significant weight change I had experienced in my life…. It’s only recently that I realised how much weight I had gained so quickly over this period… and I recognise now that I was probably suffering a little from depression.

Divorced for 2 years and enjoying being “single and free”.  Now running my own business so don’t even have a “boss” to answer to… Oh Joy.

Not that interested, but thought I had better get back into dating.  Tried out this new “Online Dating” concept (RSVP), but found everyone I dated seemed desperate to find a husband (it didn’t occur to me until many years later that the women I was mostly going out with – mid to late thirties – were actually starting to get desperate to find a “mate” and have children).

My heart really wasn’t into the dating game… I was enjoying being selfish and doing what I wanted when I wanted too much :).. which probably included eating more of the wrong foods and exercising less…
